Atlanta's long-standing power pop denizens the Young Antiques celebrate the release of their new, self-released “Fucked Up In Public” 7-inch at The Star Bar on Fri., June 18.

The title track, according to singer, guitarist and principle songwriter Blake Rainey, is basically about about getting hammered at all of the neighborhood hangouts on Euclid Ave. in Little 5 Points (El Myr, Yacht Club etc.). “It's not autobiographical, but it's safe to say that I've been to all of those bars mentioned in the song many times before,” Rainey adds.

In true 'tiques style the it's brash, fast and very clean. Not quite the usual fair of dirty recordings and sloppy chops that pass for wholesale punk these days, but the base elements are there. Plus it's called "Fucked Up In Public" and it's probably the most memorable song the Young Antiques have churned-out.

"These days I just try and write lyrics I don't think many people have written about before (that's the idea, anyway - I know I'm not the first to write a song about getting drunk) and focus them on, yes, concise songwriting," he continues. "Nuggets, I suppose, are what I'm hoping for."

The b-side features "Gotta Get Over You" and "Is It On?" The latter of which is a live soundboard recording from a show at The Pour House in Raleigh, NC.

CD Review: Young Antiques By Matt Amato

Take a gander around Little Five Points. Notice any retro styles? Jeans are getting tighter and some hairstyles more flamboyant than usual—even by scenester standards. There’s also a musical movement afoot—garage pop.

As the name suggests, it’s an edgier version of typical '80s pop, which provides much-needed rough edges to an all-too manufactured sound. The best local protagonists of this infectious, fledgling genre, The Young Antiques, have been part of the city's music scene for almost a decade.

The group's latest album, “Soundtrack to Tear Us Apart,” leans toward pop sensibilities—songs cut in three-to-four minute time ranges and rigidly structured—while eschewing pop's more asinine aspects in favor of something more hardened and genuine.

Some critics lampoon garage pop as sounding overly conflicted, as if it were musical parody incapable of delivering insightful bite. That’s utter nonsense. Bands like The Replacements remain influential torch bearers—and it’s no surprise to find the 'Tiques are receptive students.

"The Glamour Crowd," reflecting the pretentiousness around the local scene, is interesting. While there are Replacements-style touches, particularly in the guitar riffs, delicate breaks hint at more ethereal British influences like The Clash and Jam.

The layering of punk is more prevalent on "Tado Ando," which, perplexingly, is branded with pop undertones. Bookending the album, "Nothing At All" and "On a Planet," are what may be referred to as signature tracks, infused with punch, and definitely commercially viable.

For the band’s growing fan base, there’s giddy excitement about the 'Tiques’ third LP, and for good reason. For one, after a lengthy hiatus in which singer/songwriter Blake Rainey went solo, cohesion has audibly returned. Furthermore, production quality is high. For any genre with pop in the title, these are crucial elements keeping the album from crossing a fine line.

The band’s energetic sound, presumably a result of absence making the heart grow fonder, has been given directional impetus. A fresh, bright and slightly raw album is reward for refining with age.

You’ve got to love a band that can rock out in a song about Japanese architecture, and that’s exactly what you get from Atlanta, Georgia’s Young Antiques. Track two of this beautifully constructed artefact is a paean to Tadao Ando, master of melding nature with modernism. Young Antiques are drawn to the oxymoronic without ever descending to the simply moronic. They are angelically tough and their garage sound deserves to be heard by the outside world. Singer-songwriter Blake Rainey has taken years to develop the Young Antiques’ raucous, energetic and passionate signature. “Laws” sees the tempo drop, but the intensity and sheer class of the operation is upheld. Rainey can switch from the detail of the mundane to huge sweeps of power chords and a keening vocal howl. A note of praise should be sounded for engineer Tim Delaney, who produces with clarity and power. Soundtrack to Tear Us Apart

I was first introduced to this band many years ago as a college student in Athens, GA. Perhaps I caught them live at The Lunch Paper around 2001...sounds about right. The band's name jogged my memory and I jumped at the chance to review their latest offering: "Soundtrack to Tear Us Apart." While I have a positive association with their previous live show, the band has obviously worked hard to offer such a solid power-pop record.

Recurring themes of the album involve troubled relationships, depression, and substance abuse. Catchy melodies and strong hooks may distract listeners from some of the darker lyrics within the four opening tracks. But the fifth song, "Laws", clearly describes the despair of addiction to the audience: "...the freezer door which holds our vodka opens/You've got the pains again/I caught you stealing pills from boxes we kept by the bed." The stand-out tracks include the Lenny Kravitz-esque "Nothing At All," the 2:27 punk-inspired "Johnny DA DA", and the album's closer "On A Planet 2."

Overall a good listen, with subtle touches such and well-placed organ pieces to distinguish The Young Antiques from sounding too much like The Replacements, Elvis Costello, or 90's alternative rockers The Gin Blossoms. Fans of these bands should buy local! Pick up a copy of Soundtrack to Tear Us Apart from Atlanta's rockers, Young Antiques or catch them live in Athens, GA at Tasty World on New Year's Eve with Five-Eight.

Our album is out, but our touring plans have come to a halt. On our way to a show in Savannah GA with the re-united Rent Boys, Beer Wolf (our 1991 Ford Econoline e-150) blew up with no chance of recovery. May she rest in peace.
